Auslogics Disk Defrag 3.2 gets smarter, faster

auslogics defrag
Auslogics Disk Defrag has been part of my system maintenance toolkit for quite some time. With the release of version 3.2, it’s now even better at tidying up and optimizing your system’s hard disk drives. In addition to a cleaner, easier-to-use interface, Disk Defrag 3.2 offers improved single file and folder defragging, better processing of multiple disks, a simplified scheduling screen, and more informative tool tips. Auslogics has also fine-tuned the program’s defragmentation and file consolidation algorithms.

For laptop users, there’s a new option to lock the program if your system is running on battery power — so scheduled operations don’t kick in and drain your power source at an inopportune moment. If you happen to have an SSD installed in your PC, you can head to the Disk Defrag options and exclude it from scanning (many think that defragmenting an SSD is a very bad idea).

Auslogics Disk Defrag is a free download and works with most versions of Windows.

It’s no secret that certain countries have different views over freedom of expression on the internet, but this hasn’t stopped Twitter’s attempt to keep its service running in as many places as possible. In its latest blog post, the microblogging service announced that it’ll begin “to reactively withhold content from users in a specific country” when required, in order to keep said content available to all users elsewhere (as opposed to blocking it globally). The withheld tweets will be marked accordingly while their authors get notified with reasons where possible, and internet legal rights monitor Chilling Effects will also post the relevant take-down notices on a dedicated page.

This may seem like some form of censorship taking over Twitter, but the company only mentioned those of “historical or cultural reasons” like the ban of pro-Nazi content in France and Germany; so it’s not clear whether Twitter will also handle similarly with tweets that potentially lead to events such as the UK riots last year. Even though Twitter didn’t elaborate further for Reuters, there is one reassuring line in the post:

“Some [countries] differ so much from our ideas that we will not be able to exist there.”

One such country is most likely China, and back at AsiaD in October, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey told us that there’s simply no way for his company to work with the Chinese government (you can watch him answering us at 38:17 in the video — courtesy of All Things D — after the break):

“The unfortunate fact is we’re just not allowed to compete in this market, and that’s not up to us to change. The person to ask is trade experts between both governments, but at the end of the day we can’t compete. They (Chinese microblogging platforms) can compete in our markets, and we’re certainly interested in what that means for us… We would love to have a strong Twitter in China, but we’d need to be allowed to do that.”

There are obviously many factors that add up to this sour relationship, but the contradiction between China’s strict internet monitoring policy and Twitter’s core values is most likely the biggest obstacle. And of course, the Chinese government would favor its home-grown tech properties, anyway. That said, several months ago, one of the country’s largest microblogging services Sina Weibo was criticized by the authorities for not censoring fast enough, so it’s obvious that it’d be even trickier to work with a foreign company that sees things differently. Things are unlikely to change any time soon, or ever, unless China relaxes its policy.

Miley Cyrus Defends Gay Rights Tattoo

Cyrus tweeted a photo of her equal-sign tattoo over the weekend, prompting debate among fans regarding gay rights.

<P><a href="/music/artist/cyrus__miley/artist.jhtml">Miley Cyrus</a> has never shied away from speaking her mind, and over the weekend she posted a photo of her latest body ink on <a href="http://yfrog.com/klqc7jlj" target="_blank">Twitter</a>: an equal-sign tattoo on her ring finger. In addition to sharing with the world her pro-gay rights stance via tat, she tweeted the message, "All LOVE is equal." However, the photo quickly prompted a debate on her Twitter account when fans began to respond to Miley's tattoo with mixed feelings. "Where does it say in the bible to judge others? Oh right. It doesn't," Miley tweeted to one fan who questioned her belief in God after displaying her support of the gay community. "GOD is the only judge honey. GOD is love." But when her fans began attacking the fan who questioned her, Miley defended her for sharing her opinion with the world. "Dude everyone lay off … Love u! Everyone is entitled 2 opinions! If u don't stand 4 something you'll fall for anything." Her <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/mileycyrus" target="_blank">Twitter</a> profile shares a similar message: "Let your light shine. Be a source of strength &amp; courage. Share your wisdom. RADIATE LOVE." This isn't the first time that Miley's sharing her beliefs on Twitter has sparked debate. In a <i>Parade</i> magazine interview in March 2010, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1634265/miley-cyrus-received-hate-mail-on-twitter.jhtml" target="_blank">Cyrus said</a> that one of the reasons she had <a href="/news/articles/1625191/miley-cyrus-thinks-everyone-should-leave-twitter.jhtml">quit Twitter</a> for a time was that she was getting angry tweets from fans who didn't agree with her support of gay marriage. She returned to <a href="/news/articles/1661364/miley-cyrus-charlie-sheen-twitter.jhtml">Twitter</a> earlier this year. "There has been so much controversy sometimes about what I've said or done because I believe there are no mistakes, because God is the only one who can judge us," Cyrus explained. "That's the reason I deleted my Twitter account because I said on there that I believed in gay marriage because everyone should have the right to love each other, and I got such hate mail about my being a bad person." <i>What do you think of Miley's outspoken support of marriage equality and gay rights? Tell us in the comments.</i></p>

February 1 is change your password day. But don’t make it a one-time thing. Password changing should be a routine you practice regularly. Like hand-washing, or trolling Facebook. Especially ones you’ve shared. More »

Student-friendly Lenovo ThinkPad X130e available now for $429
The last time we heard about the inexpensive and student-friendly ThinkPad X130e, it was being snatched up by the eager school districts. That move ultimately pushed back the rig’s planned ship date, but fortunately Lenovo seems to have caught up with the demand for its rugged miniature. In case you need a mind refresh, the X130e is sporting an 11.6-inch HD LED display, 250GB for all your storage needs, four gigs of RAM and your choice of an AMD Fusion or i3 processor at its Core (see what we did there?), just to mention a few goodies. Those of you who’ve been counting the days to get your hands on the $429 entry-level ThinkPad can finally do so at the source link below.

[Thanks, Andrew]

BlackBerry Messenger 6.0 screenshots leak

bbm 6
A leaked early version of RIM’s upcoming BlackBerry Messenger 6 has been making the rounds since late February, but images of the new app are just now beginning to appear. Over at CrackBerry, the crew has shared a handful of images of BBM 6 in action. Unfortunately, you won’t get a glimpse at a chat or file transfer — only the profile screens (after the break) and what you see above. All that’s really revealed so far is the option to set custom contact and chat colors and BlackBerry OS 6.1-style icons.

CrackBerry also warns against installing the leaked BBM 6 app. There’s no guarantee this app hasn’t been tampered with, and BlackBerry devices are becoming a more common target for cybercriminals.

opera 11.10

The crew in Oslo keeps plugging away at Opera 11.10, and the latest snapshot build includes a number of improvements to Opera’s built-in email client — as well as HTML5-related additions.

On the IMAP front, Opera now supports special folders like sent items, spam, and trash. It also better handles duplicate items in Gmail — such as those which appear in all mail and under your custom labels.

Opera 11.10 now partially supports the HTML5 File API as well, which means your favorite Web apps (like Gmail) may soon begin adding Opera to the list of supported browsers.

You can download the latest Opera 11.10 snapshot for Windows, Mac, or Linux from the official release post.

Update: The Opera 11.10 RC is now available, as pointed out by SlashZaku in the comments. Thanks!

Amazon Appstore for Android Test Drive

When Amazon Appstore for Android launched last week, one of its primary features — Test Drive — was disabled just a few minutes after it opened. With no try-before-you-buy, no refund process, and 1-Click purchasing ready to strike at any moment, this caused some problems. Anyway, don’t despair: Test Drive is now enabled.

Before you get your hopes up, Test Drive doesn’t work with every app. The IMDb app works fine — you can even watch movie trailers on it! — but the Angry Birds games are sadly not enabled. Some games work surprisingly well, though, like Bubble Buster. There’s very little latency, and the framerate is really rather good. The Test Drive experience is so true to life that you even get ads; how cool is that?
